Burma / Myanmar

September 27, 2007

With the 500% increase on the fuel prices, the cost of living far exceed the meagre means of the Burmese. Underlying the issue of crippling poverty, the Burmese people have been living under an oppressive regime for almost half a century with their basic needs severely curtailed.

For the past weeks, civilians have protested against the price hikes but to no avail. Over the past few days, the highly revered Burmese monks have joined in the protest marches in the main cities of Burma, taking on the plight of their laypeople. In Yangon (aka Rangoon), the monks have taken to marching between the Shwedagon Pagoda, spiritual centre of Yangon to the Sule Pagoda, landmark of the 1988 massacre of student protestors.

These peaceful barefooted protestors who numbered to 100,000 proceeded without reprisals from the regime for several days. Yesterday, the bloodshed has started with the killings of monks and civilians and people being bundled away in military trucks.

But who cares? As long as Starbucks is serving caramal macchiatoes, our world still spins.

Like arse.

Please read the following articles that convey so much more than I can. And those who can, please pray. Those who can’t, please create awareness. Thanks.

MNG jeans

September 26, 2007

Before skinny jeans happened, there were slim bootcut Mango jeans in midnight blue. I owned a pair of them since a decade ago.

Today, I’m wearing these jeans again with a black cotton shirt that’s recklessly (un)buttoned. I hear Timberlake’s Bringing Sexy Back streaming through. Wow*

I’m looking at my jeans, now faded to an everyman blue. The creases, scruffs, flecks of paint, fraying seams & cuffs, generated by age, not acid-wash or chemical interference.

The denim has remembered my contours better than any lover and it is a snug embrace. The comfortable fit sets me thinking about the people I treasure.

Eye, eye, ma’am!

September 24, 2007

It’s been 17 hours since

I curled my skinny long lashes with Shu Uemura’s eye lash curler

and applied the ZA Cutie Curl Long Lash mascara

on my lashes.

And I am amazed that my lashes still have the coquettish up-flip to them.

Beer Lao & Tony Leung

September 22, 2007

The closing scene of WKW’s In the Mood for Love had the magnificent Tony Leung whispering secrets into a perfect round crevice near a doorway of Angkor Wat.

I recall watching ITMFL with my brother in Y2K and him commenting that he would definitely get his woman a cheongsam to pour herself into. For his viewing pleasure.

5 years later, I stood awe-struck in front of the Angkor Wat.
And on the ass-mushing 16 hour scam-bus ride from Siem Reap back to Bangkok and countless Alphabet & Name games with hamsterZ, I realised that the most of the tourists were ang-mohs who shelled out loads to come over to our side of the world to explore our kampongs and I made the decision then that I would check in and make friends with all my neighbours too.

Since then, I have checked out good-looking men in

  1. Singapore (my hometown)
  2. Malaysia
  3. Indonesia
  4. Thailand
  5. Cambodia
  6. Vietnam ( Vietnamese men win! Esp the hottie at Minh’s Jazz Club in Hanoi )

So that leaves me with

  1. Laos
  2. Myanmar
  3. The Philippines
  4. Brunei &
  5. dear East Timor

I intended to travel to Laos in late ‘06, but postponed the trip as a loved one was severely ill. Re-scheduled the trip to Feb ‘07, but since someone dear was already traveling back from abroad during that period, I shelved my travel plans again. As I already exceed my travel budget for this year, I promised my financial planner that I would only travel to Laos in ‘08, but how the fcuk could I know that Tigerair was gonna rip the SIN – Udon Thani route off its itinerary come 2008??

So now, I’ve booked my Laos trip for late Oct and I’m eager to step onto orche paths once more.

I will be going to the Lao capital Vientiane & Louang Phrabang . Hopefully, I might also be able to squeeze in trips to Xiang Khoang where the Plains of Jars are , take the slow boat to Nong Khiaw and sample ‘happy’ shakes & tubing in Vieng Vang .

Come End Oct 07 , I will have in my posession, more Beer Lao tees & a couple of Beer Lao beer.

Meanwhile, you folks can leave me your Beer Lao tee sizes!
